Late tries give NZ win over SA

Captain Richie McCaw and wing Joe Rokocoko scored late tries to snatch a 26-21 win for New Zealand over South Africa in their Tri-Nations match in Durban on Saturday. South Africa ruled the opening quarter by kicking much of their possession downfield and using their superior lineout to continue the attack..

Matfield lashes out at BJ Botha critics

New Springbok captain Victor Matfield lashed out on Friday at suggestions that tighthead BJ Botha scrums illegally. Australia and New Zealand, South Africa’s opponents in the Tri-Nations tournament, have accused Botha of scrumming at an inward angle, which is against the laws of the game.

Bismarck to join Bok squad

Uncapped Bismarck du Plessis will join the South African squad as cover for injured captain John Smit ahead of the Tri-Nations match against New Zealand in Durban on Saturday. Hooker Du Plessis becomes the 31st member of a squad that was hit by injuries in the Springboks’ 22-19 win over Australia in the opening match of the tournament.

Outspoken Sonn proved an able administrator

International Cricket Council president Percy Sonn, who died on May 27, will be remembered as an able administrator and a firebrand who sometimes spoke his mind too freely for his own good. He was a major figure in the racial unification of South African cricket and served as president of the United Cricket Board from 2000 to 2003.

Kallis blames conditions for SA loss

South African vice-captain Jacques Kallis blamed the unpredictable Caribbean weather for his team’s defeat by New Zealand in a World Cup Super Eights match on Saturday. New Zealand restricted South Africa to 193 for seven and replied with 196 with five wickets and 10 balls to spare.

Security remains low-key at World Cup

Despite Bob Woolmer’s murder, players and coaches at the Cricket World Cup remain within easy reach of those who could do them harm. The death of Woolmer, who Jamaican police say was strangled in his hotel room on March 18, sparked criticism from their camp that there was not adequate security for the teams.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith said his team remained confident of World Cup success despite their loss to Australia in their Group A match on Saturday. ”A victory would have been terrific, but there’s still so much cricket to be played in the tournament,” Smith told a news conference.
