World Cup gas scare ‘a storm in a teacup’

South African coach Mickey Arthur said his Cricket World Cup squad had been neither shaken nor stirred by the drama over a gas leak at the team’s hotel in Port of Spain on Wednesday. The Trinidad Hilton was evacuated at 8.15am after guests and staff were overcome with fumes that were later traced to a gas leak on the eighth floor of the 12-storey building.

Mixed feelings in Trinidad over World Cup

Not all Trinidadians seem to be enthused at the prospect of the 2007 World Cup finally rolling on to their shores next week. A cartoon published in the Trinidad Guardian on Tuesday summed up the opinions of some concerned citizens. ”Boy, how come yuh watching World Cup cricket like if yuh in church,” one man asks another. Both are formally attired.

Kemp, Gibbs suffer injury scare

All-rounder Justin Kemp and batsman Herschelle Gibbs suffered injury scares during training on the eve of South Africa’s World Cup warm-up match against Ireland on Monday. Kemp was hit on the left big toe by fast bowler Charl Langeveldt while he batted in the nets on Sunday. Gibbs injured a finger during a fielding drill.

Pakistan defeat Proteas to level series

Determined batting by Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal steered Pakistan to a five-wicket victory in the second Test against South Africa on Monday to level the series at 1-1. Younis was 67 not out with Kamran Akmal on 57, the pair adding 99 for the unbroken sixth wicket to pull Pakistan out of trouble to reach the victory target of 191 just before tea on day four.

Kallis lifts SA into lead

All-rounder Jacques Kallis compiled a patient innings to nudge South Africa into the lead on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan on Sunday. Kallis was 84 not out at lunch, which South Africa reached on 191 for four in their second innings — a lead of 50 runs.

Inzamam steals Ntini’s thunder

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq hit 92 not out to dampen the celebrations of Makhaya Ntini, who took his 300th wicket for South Africa in the second Test on Saturday. South Africa were 115 for three in their second innings at the close of the second day, a deficit of 26 runs.

Ntini keeps South Africa in the hunt

Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini kept South Africa in the hunt on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan on Friday. Pakistan were 135 for six in reply to South Africa’s first innings of 124 at stumps in Port Elizabeth. A bristling bowling display by Ntini saw him take four for 18 from 10 overs.

SA cruise to victory over Pakistan

Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis steered South Africa to a comfortable win in the first Test against Pakistan on Monday. South Africa, who were chasing 199 to win, reached 199-3 with 40 minutes to go before the scheduled tea interval on the fifth day. Pakistan were dismissed for 313 in their first innings, to which South Africa replied with 417.

Smith says speed trial awaits India

South Africa captain Graeme Smith has warned India to expect a trial by fire in the first Test on Friday. The South Africans have omitted spinners from their squad, confirming that they will attack the Indians with an all-pace attack on the traditionally fast and bouncy Wanderers pitch.

SA recall Prince for remaining one-dayers

South Africa have recalled Ashwell Prince for the last two one-day internationals against India. Prince replaced fellow batsman Boeta Dippenaar in the only change to the squad that has earned South Africa a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Prince (29) played the last of his 37 one-day internationals against Sri Lanka in Hobart on February 7.
