Kenyan police fire tear gas at women gang members

Police fired tear gas at women members of a feared Kenyan gang on Friday as they tried to deliver a petition to Prime Minister Raila Odinga. About 50 women, many of them elderly or with children on their backs, assembled at Odinga’s party headquarters, asking to speak with him about alleged illegal police killings of gang members.

Oil-tanker crash kills at least 29 in Kenya

An oil tanker truck rolled down a hill and smashed into four minibuses in Kenya, killing 29 people and injuring more than 30, police said on Friday. The tanker’s driver had stopped to refuel on Thursday when the vehicle started rolling, police chief Grace Kaindi said in Kisii, about 270km west of the capital, Nairobi.

Crowd in Kenyan slum sets church alight

A crowd burned a church compound on Friday in one of Africa’s largest slums after a long-running land dispute flared into violence, witnesses and police said. Nobody was injured. Police said there was a dispute between the local Nubian community, which is mainly Muslim, and the Presbyterian Church over land ownership.

Overnight violence claims lives in Kenya

Eleven people were killed in and around the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, during a surge in violence overnight, including two people found beheaded and eight killed in a shootout, police said on Friday. Three people — including the two who were beheaded — were found slain in Banana Hill on the outskirts of Nairobi.
