Locals take early lead in Giro del Capo

So much for an international race. A strong South African contingent set the tone in the opening stage of the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Giro del Capo and were the dominant force in the prologue in Paarl on Tuesday evening. Quickest on the 5,5km stage was MTN Microsoft’s Daryl Impey (7:23,93).

Habana emerges as Bulls’ saviour

There may have been no sounding of the controversial Bok van Blerk song De la Rey, but Springbok and Bulls winger Bryan Habana was the one man who saved his team from the certain jaws of defeat. At the last moment, Habana salvaged the match by scoring in the left-hand corner to give the Bulls a 30-27 victory.

Not even Schalk Burger could save Stormers

With a single ball yet to be kicked in the 2007 Super 14, the Bulls look to be the firm favourites to fly the South African flag in the competition after beating the Stormers 25-19 in a warm-up match played at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. The significance of the game was the return of Springbok flanker Schalk Burger.

White lives to see another day

Springbok coach Jake White survived a vote of no confidence in the 14-union president’s council on Wednesday. White arrived in Cape Town on Wednesday morning from London to face the council after the Springboks suffered two losses — to Ireland and in the first Test against England — in two successive weeks.

New Springbok manager Zola Yeye has moved from being Jake White’s strongest critics to possibly one of his closest allies. The two men showed a united front at Yeye’s first press conference after being appointed as Springbok manager, though White admitted that he and the players had been sceptical of Yeye before the appointment.

Saru: No Bok strike on the cards

South African Rugby Union (Saru) acting managing director Basil Haddad has quashed speculation of a Springbok player strike a few days before the Boks jet off to Europe for their end-of-year tour. It had been reported on South African Broadcasting Corporation radio on Monday that the Springboks could go on strike over the appointment of the team manager.

White names four new caps

Springbok coach Jake White named four new call-ups to his 28 men squad while giving a few senior players resting time ahead tour to the United Kingdom at the end of the year. Free State Cheetahs fullback Bevan Fortuin, Blue Bulls flanker Hilton Lobberts, Lions centre Jaco Pretorius and Sharks flyhalf Francois Steyn are the four new members in White’s squad.
