South African Rugby Union (Saru) vice-president Mike Stofile has vowed to resign if beleaguered president Brian van Rooyen is re-elected on February 24 at the organisation’s annual general meeting. ”If he [Van Rooyen] is re-elected, I will resign immediately. I can no longer work with that man,” said Stofile on Wednesday.

The South African Football Association (Safa) will not shoulder the blame for Bafana Bafana’s dismal first-round exit from the African Nations Cup currently under way in Egypt. This was the message delivered by Safa vice-president and head of delegation Mubarak Mahomed on Wednesday.

Bafana Bafana coach Ted Dumitru has apologised to South Africa for the failure of the national soccer team at the African Nations Cup. ”It is difficult to find all the reasons why we lost,” he said. Bafana Bafana captain Sibusiso Zuma said the team had been delusional to expect victories over teams such as Tunisia and Ghana.

The imminent fight for the presidency of the South African Rugby Union between incumbent president Brian van Rooyen and the man opposing him, KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins, will not end in a blood bath, Hoskins said on Monday. Hoskins confirmed last week Friday that he would be contesting SA Rugby’s presidency.

A five-hour SA Rugby president’s council meeting on Friday — supposedly regarding the future of SA Rugby president Brian van Rooyen — was much ado about nothing. The council decided to meet after the resignation of Judge Edwin King from heading an inquiry that was to investigate Van Rooyen on 11 counts of corporate mismanagement.

The South African men’s hockey side sank to yet another series defeat when they were beaten 1-0 by a low-ranked Ireland side at the Tshwane University of Technology on Thursday evening. The match was a series decider that the hosts were banking on winning after a 3-0 series loss to England on Monday.

South African Rugby Union president Brian van Rooyen received a stay of execution on Wednesday afternoon when Judge Edwin King resigned as head of an inquiry to investigate corporate mismanagement by Van Rooyen. King cited personal reasons as well as SA Rugby dragging its feet with proceedings.
