The ASEZ is an eco-industrial park, designated in 2018. Its aims are to develop a manufacturing hub that is mandated to: attract greentech investments and tenants and support the implementation of the South African Renewable Masterplan, specifically the localisation of renewable energy and electric vehicle components; and promote low carbon manufacturing, thereby protecting South Africa’s export-related industries in the context of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. The zone incorporates sustainable design into its infrastructure, such as water-sensitive urban design for aquifer recharge and water recycling, and roads constructed from a mix of recycled plastic and asphalt. Its “living lab” approach fosters innovation by testing sustainable practices in real-world applications. The ASEZ promotes inclusive growth and jobs through initiatives such as the Steam (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) project and the Building Renewable Energy Conscious Communities, which bridges the knowledge gap regarding renewable energy technologies and the Atlantic community. So far 278 people have been upskilled, benefiting 896 entrepreneurs and enterprises. Grade 8 learners in five schools in the Greater Atlantis area participate in the Steam project. Agreements have been signed for renewable energy generation projects for Zone 1. A key objective of the ASEZ is zero-waste to landfill. Two firms want to establish e-waste facilities and another wants to develop a waste-to-energy facility.
