“The future belongs to those who invest in sustainable solutions today.”

Greatfuel was founded by Mosa Hope Mapheto in 2021 to address the health and environmental issues associated with waste cooking oil by converting it into biodiesel. Operating in the rural Capricorn district of Limpopo, Greatfuel addresses environmental problems through renewable energy, regenerative agriculture and waste recycling. Mosa’s promotion of biodiesel production reduces pollution and supports a green energy transition for local businesses, including farmers, by providing a cleaner fuel alternative. “Growing up in a rural area, I saw firsthand the struggles of unemployed youth, especially those who returned to Limpopo post-graduation,” she says. To help, she started a small agricultural project in her grandfather’s backyard, growing vegetable crops to sell to local retailers. When Mosa found out that some companies collected waste cooking oil, bleached it and resold, it inspired her to remove a potential health hazard and provide a sustainable fuel option. Greatfuel quickly attracted interest from eco-conscious businesses aiming to lower their carbon footprint. It has recently forged a partnership with Afrika Tikkun, which has enabled it to train 30 local youths in sustainable agriculture. The team aims to create a rural agricultural hub and a model for green entrepreneurship and a circular economy by growing sunflowers, producing cooking oil for local restaurants, collecting it back and making it into biodiesel.
