Govt warns of toxic shellfish

West-coast shellfish, including mussels, oysters and perlemoen, should not be collected and eaten because they are toxic, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism warned on Tuesday. Tests on perlemoen collected at Melkbosstrand had revealed low levels of a toxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning.

War veterans evict dozens of Zim farmers

More than 60 mostly white Zimbabwean farmers have been evicted from their land by war veterans loyal to President Robert Mugabe since the weekend, a farmers’ union said on Tuesday. ”The situation is very severe. The evictions are continuing right round the country,” Commercial Farmers’ Union president Trevor Gifford said.

FBJ chief rubbishes SAHRC findings

Abbey Makoe, chairperson of the Forum of Black Journalists (FBJ), has lashed out at a South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) finding regarding a controversial FBJ meeting where white journalists were barred based on the colour of their skin, calling it "nothing more than a judicial ambush" and a "banning order".

John Cleese offers to write Obama’s gags

Monty Python legend John Cleese is to offer his services as a speechwriter to Barack Obama if he wins the Democratic nomination to become United States president, he told a British newspaper on Tuesday. The British comedian, who lives in California, told the Western Daily Press that his jokes could help the Illinois senator get into the White House.
