UN says road deaths kill as many as Aids

The United Nations is to hold its first debate on road safety amid warnings that the problem is a ”public health crisis” on the scale of Aids, malaria and tuberculosis. Next week’s meeting will follow research by the World Health Organisation forecasting that between 2000 and 2015, road accidents will cause 20-million deaths.

Afghans unite to cheer brave new stars

The people of Afghanistan came together in a moment of cultural unity on Friday. The vast majority of them watched — some nervously in secret, others openly, gathered outside cafés — as the grand finale of the television talent contest Afghan Star was broadcast. The weekly show had become a national phenomenon.

Astronauts breeze through final spacewalk

Spacewalking astronauts stashed an inspection boom to the outside of the International Space Station on Saturday to assure the next shuttle crew can scrutinise their ship for damage. Latching the boom to the outside of the station was the primary task of the fifth and final spacewalk conducted by the Endeavour crew.

Two die in Free State plane crash

Two men died when their light aircraft crashed on a farm near Van Reenen on Saturday afternoon, said Free State police. The two-seater light aircraft went down approximately 45km south of Harrismith, near the N3 freeway, said ER24 spokesperson Riana Beech. According to witnesses on the scene, the aircraft had completed several flights during the day.
