Zim rights group: Defy your commanders

A rights group on Friday urged Zimbabwe’s security forces to defy commanders who have vowed they would support only President Robert Mugabe to rule the country after next week’s poll. ”Go against the orders of your commanders, lay down your arms and rally behind the people of Zimbabwe to foster reconstruction and development,” said the National Constitutional Assembly.

Force storm home to beat Highlanders

Australia’s Western Force piled on 16 unanswered points in the last quarter to beat New Zealand’s Otago Highlanders 36-28 in a Super 14 match at Queenstown on Saturday. The Force trailed 28-20 with just 14 minutes to go but scored a late converted try and booted three penalties to cement their place in the top four.

Otto takes five-shot Madeira lead

South Africa’s Hennie Otto mastered buffeting gusts that interrupted the Madeira Islands Open second round for a time on Friday to surge into a five-stroke lead.
Otto lies 10-under-par 134 after a second five-under 67. The 31-year-old, looking for a win to regain his tour card, pitched in for an eagle-two after nearly driving the 10th green.

Mugabe warns over Kenya-style violence

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe warned the opposition on Friday against Kenyan-style violence if they lose next week’s election, saying security forces stood ready to crush such protests. The 84-year-old leader faces a stiff challenge from former ally Simba Makoni and long time rival Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the main faction of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
