Titans take domestic limited-overs title

Excellent batting and bowling took the Titans to a well-deserved 38-run victory over the Warriors in the final of the MTN domestic championship at SuperSport Park on Wednesday. Put in to bat by the Warriors, the Titans scored an impressive 269-6 — the highest total in any match in the championship this season.

Ronaldo sends United clear as Chelsea stumble

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a first-half double to send Manchester United clear at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over struggling Bolton at Old Trafford on Wednesday. A strike from 12 yards and a long-range free-kick took Ronaldo’s goal tally for the season to 33 and left the champions three points clear of Arsenal.

Ajax stumble against Stars

Ajax Cape Town dropped two points as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a stubborn Platinum Stars side in an Absa Premiership clash at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night. Ajax started the game well and had an early chance when Russell Mwafulirwa fired in a volley from the edge of the area, which drew a good save out of Stars keeper Wayne Sandilands.

Cheers escape into the chlorine-tinged air. Young legs move up and down nervously and hands cling to the railings around the swimming pool. Bang! Jenna Higgins (24) dives gracefully into the pool and moves quickly through the water, competing in the 200m backstroke. She clocks in at 3:39,68. It is the new world record.

China ramps up security, cautions UK on Dalai Lama

China ramped up security on Thursday to quell a Tibetan uprising as it expressed concern over British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s planned meeting with the Dalai Lama. Huge military convoys were seen heading towards Tibet, while a build-up of troops took place in nearby provinces after a week of violent protests against China’s rule of the region.

Obama: Race row has ‘shaken me up’

Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama on Wednesday admitted to being ”shaken” by a controversy over racial politics ignited by his pastor’s incendiary sermons. Obama, who gave a landmark speech about race in America on Tuesday, admitted in an interview with CNN that the matter had affected him personally.

Govt backs proposed Eskom tariff hike

The government supports Eskom’s bid for a 53% tariff increase, the Public Enterprises Department said on Wednesday. It explained the price hike the parastatal has requested from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa will constitute ”essential cash flow” to allow Eskom to deal with the rising costs of fuel and diesel.
