Health crisis looms in Kenya

A devastating health emergency looms in Kenya where an explosion of post-election violence has killed hundreds and displaced a quarter of a million others, British charity Merlin warned on Sunday. Local aid workers fear an outbreak of diseases in crowded make-shift camps in schools, hospitals and churches, most of which were still out of reach.

Strong earthquake hits southern Greece

A powerful earthquake measuring 6,5 on the Richter Scale hit the Peloponnese region of southern Greece early on Sunday, the geodynamics institute of the Athens observatory reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Greece is the European country most prone to earthquakes, with seismic activity accounting for half of the continent’s tremors.

Georgian opposition call protest over polls

Georgia’s opposition called for its supporters to take to the streets on Sunday after a disputed exit poll showed incumbent Mikheil Saakashvili winning in the first round of a snap presidential vote. Saakashvili predicted victory, saying in a statement that independent exit polls "show that we are winning in the first round".

Smith leads Proteas to victory

South Africa captain Graeme Smith blasted 85 off 79 balls to guide his team to a seven-wicket win on the fourth day of the second Test against the West Indies at Newlands on Saturday. Smith’s innings enabled South Africa to square the series with one match to play. Victory with a day to spare seemed unlikely after a heroic effort by West Indian skipper Chris Gayle.

Zuma gets married in KwaZulu-Natal

African National Congress president Jacob Zuma married his fourth wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli of KwaMaphumulo, at his homestead at Nkandla in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday. Between 400 and 500 guests — mainly family — attended the ceremony, which lasted about three hours.

Somali gunmen kidnapped two Libyan diplomats in Mogadishu’s busy Bakara market on Saturday, a driver for the two men said. ”Ten men with pistols in their hands surrounded us. They seized the two diplomats and left with the car,” the driver, who declined to give his name for fear of reprisal, said.
