UK: Odds against fair Zimbabwe elections

The odds are against Zimbabwe’s elections next month being free or fair despite South African efforts to mediate between President Robert Mugabe and the opposition, Britain’s Africa minister said. ”We want to keep an open mind on this … but the omens and early signs are not good,” said Mark Malloch-Brown.

Shot UDM councillor dies in hospital

The United Democratic Movement councillor for the Metsimaholo municipality in the Free State, who was shot in the face recently, has died in hospital, police confirmed on Tuesday. Isaac Mokgatla (38) was shot in the Tshepiso informal settlement after he collected his two children from a school on January 31.

From Russia with malice

The Russian Federation is now a "superpower" of spam email, becoming the second-most-prolific country after the United States in producing junk emails, a computer security firm said on Monday. It accounts for "one in 12 junk mails seen in inboxes", according to security firm Sophos in its quarterly update on spam email.

Google’s Android debuts in Barcelona

The first cellphones fitted with Google’s Android software platform made their debut at an industry trade show on Monday, a milestone for the internet giant as it looks to dominate the wireless world. A handful of chip makers showed off prototype handsets at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
