ANC on knife edge ahead of Polokwane

President Thabo Mbeki risks being cast aside by his party next week in favour of an arch rival who may yet be charged with corruption. Mbeki still has two years left as head of state but analysts say a defeat at the hands of Jacob Zuma in the African National (ANC) Congress leadership contest could leave him a lame duck.

The bonus episode is set in a New Jersey courtroom and stars the creator of The Sopranos, David Chase. No one yet knows the exact plot line, but sparks are bound to fly as Chase confronts the man who is trying to whack him hard.

Let’s say that ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma wins at Polokwane. As ANC president, what will his first speech be next Thursday, December 20? The <i>Mail & Guardian</i> hopes it will be this: Comrades, the challenges facing the ANC are enormous. As we enter our 97th year we owe a lot, not only to the party, but to the broader public. Convicted serial rapist blames victims

Convicted serial rapist Mongezi Jinxela claimed during testimony in mitigation of sentence on Wednesday that women misled men and then cried rape to the courts. Johannesburg High Court Judge George Maluleka found Jinxela guilty last Thursday of raping 60 women. Altogether he was found guilty on 219 charges of rape, kidnapping, robbery and assault.

Winnie’s solution moots Zuma presidency

Controversial African National Congress (ANC) veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has proposed ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma become South Africa’s president in 2009 and that a ”solution” be found for the legal difficulties confronting him. According to a statement issued by her office, Madikizela-Mandela on Wednesday spelled out her ”intervention proposal”.
