SA trounce New Zealand

A five-wicket haul by Dale Steyn helped South Africa beat New Zealand by a mammoth 358 runs 42 minutes after lunch on the fourth day of the first Castle Lager Test at the Wanderers on Sunday. Scott Styris and Brendon McCullum resumed play on the overnight score of 57 for three.

Musharraf plans Pakistan election by January 9

Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf said on Sunday a general election will be held by January 9 — but under a state of emergency he imposed eight days ago. Musharraf, under pressure to put Pakistan back on a path to democracy, said the National Assembly and provincial assemblies will be dissolved in coming days.

‘In Uganda, oil will be not be a curse’

Uganda hopes that recent oil discoveries will lift it out of poverty, but the conflict-scarred east African country is taking a cautious approach towards its new status as an oil-producing nation. Oil found in the west on the banks of Lake Albert is propelling the country into a new phase of its economic history.

Morocco boosts security budget sharply

Draft Moroccan legislation has earmarked nearly 30% of the state’s 2008 budget for security, underscoring anti-terrorism concerns after spring suicide attacks, a government source said on Saturday. The state is expected to pour about 45-billion dirhams (,8-billion) into security, a 29% boost from 2007.
