Not much cheer for children

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals, set at the turn of the century, made up the most aspirational development programme ever devised. But a progress report published recently by Unicef says that even though more babies are surviving, more children are in school and fewer families live in poverty, urgent action is needed if the goals are to be met by the target date of 2015.

Thread bare

I call her "the torturer" to her face, as do most of her clients, but that never elicits anything other than a broad smile and a smug nod. She’s diminutive, has delicate features and a soft nature, yet the pain she inflicts easily brings tears to the eyes of her many clients. Three years after being a regular customer of hers, I still wriggle and scream out loud.

All shades of ANC

The national executive committee (NEC) of the ANC is likely to see the infusion of the next generation of party leaders in its highest decision- making structure. The battle for a position in the structure is one of the most contested in the ANC’s history, with 158 people competing for 60 spots. The number will exceed 158 as those losing out on the top six officials positions automatically fall into the pool of NEC candidates.

Dreaming of a better life

The idea of children crossing borders often conjures up images of paedophile rings, clandestine smuggling operations and helpless, vulnerable children, whisked away from their loved ones. Increasingly, however, foreign children living in South Africa are found to have left their homes willingly, in search of a better life here.

Putin’s man gets Putin’s job

The beauty of Russia’s political system is that you do not need an election to know the name of the next president. No primaries, no caucuses, no real campaigning and fundamentally no choice. Russia’s next president was announced this week by the current one. He will be the First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Chancellor House should concern us all

Understanding the role of the ANC treasurer general, and the books that he will hand to his successor, sheds light on the course of the ruling party. The manner in which the ANC treasury operates sadly has come to represent the worst feature of modern democracy: the secret embrace between money and politics, where two is company and the electorate makes an unwelcome crowd, writes Hennie van Vuuren.

Alert! We’re going manual!

Sabelo “Shanée” Moroka (a woman trapped in a man’s body, trapped in a big tent at the ANC conference), wonders what we’ll eventually get to see on Polokwane: The DVD. What a day, dear diary, what a day! Finally got the piece of plastic which allows me into the conference!
