A car to be made by Iran, Malaysia and Turkey will be launched in 2011, the head of the Middle East’s biggest carmaker, Iran Khodro, said on Wednesday. Proton chief executive, Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, said in November the countries would develop the car with Islamic features such as a compass to determine the direction of Mecca.

United States Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson came away from two days of talks on Thursday convinced that China sees the need for a stronger yuan. Although the grand-sounding ”strategic economic dialogue” apparently produced slim pickings, Paulson said it provided a sound foundation on which to expand cooperation.

Confidence in South Africa’s manufacturing sector improved in the fourth quarter on a recovery in domestic demand, but export performance remained poor, the Bureau for Economic Research said on Thursday. The independent bureau’s manufacturing business confidence index increased by four points to 69.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) still expects to make an announcement regarding its investigation of police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi this week, NPA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said on Thursday. ”An announcement will be made this week but I can’t say if it will be today,” said Tlali.

The JSE continued to linger in the red at midday on Thursday, burdened by the sell-off on global markets. By noon, the JSE all-share index had lost 1,43% to 29 872,5 points. The platinum and gold mining indices retreated 2,52% and 1,03% respectively, while resources gave up 1,9%.

A retired Scottish school teacher was recovering this week after spending nearly four days trapped inside a men’s toilet with no food or cellphone. David Leggat was locked inside the bathroom at a lawn bowling club near the Scottish city of Aberdeen after the door jammed and the handle on the outside fell off.

President Thabo Mbeki’s free-market economic policies have been ”disastrous” for the country, Zwelinzima Vavi, Cosatu’s general secretary told the Financial Times in an interview published on Thursday. Vavi accused Mbeki’s government of having lost sight of the concerns of the poor and unemployed during his eight years of rule.

Cricket Australia (CA) says the sport could attract a four-fold increase in television ratings by introducing day-night Test matches within the next decade. CA chief executive James Sutherland confirmed on Thursday reports that his organisation was preparing to defy 130 years of tradition by trialling day-night Tests.
