President Thabo Mbeki’s free-market economic policies have been ”disastrous” for the country, Zwelinzima Vavi, Cosatu’s general secretary told the Financial Times in an interview published on Thursday. Vavi accused Mbeki’s government of having lost sight of the concerns of the poor and unemployed during his eight years of rule.

Cricket Australia (CA) says the sport could attract a four-fold increase in television ratings by introducing day-night Test matches within the next decade. CA chief executive James Sutherland confirmed on Thursday reports that his organisation was preparing to defy 130 years of tradition by trialling day-night Tests.

Over one million Muslims have arrived in Saudi Arabia for the annual haj pilgrimage amid tight security in the kingdom, which is battling Islamic militants. The official Saudi Press Agency said this week that 1,2-million people had arrived so far for the five-day rites which are expected to begin on December 18.

Libyan leader Moammar Gadaffi, who has proved an awkward guest for Nicolas Sarkozy, described his visit to France as "historic" and condemned terrorism after a second meeting with the president. Gadaffi told France 24 television in an interview he saw it as "an opening to have relations with Europe. It’s historic."
