The South African Airways (SAA) Open, formerly the South African Open, which tees off at the Pearl Valley Golf Estates in Paarl on Thursday, has attracted the strongest field in the history of the championship. The Open will include Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Retief Goosen, Tim Clark, US Open champion Angel Cabrera, veteran Greg Norman and Darren Clarke.

An Israeli judge has ordered the country’s prison authority to pay an inmate over 000 in compensation after he complained of having to share a cell with cockroaches. Mordechai Yehudai filed a lawsuit complaining of poor hygiene, a lack of fresh air, broken windows and inmates who smoke in a handful of cells, a spokesperson for the Israel Prisons Service said.

A Kenyan pilot who survived more than a week eating leaves and drinking his urine after crashing in dense forest says he will continue flying, despite cheating death in his second accident in two years. Captain Solomon Nyanjui was feared dead after his helicopter went missing during a November 15 flight from Isiolo to Nairobi.

South African maize futures continued their rebound from a two-week slump as the market reversed a heavy selling trend, traders said on Tuesday. Prices have fallen since the Crop Estimates Committee unexpectedly hiked South Africa’s maize crop forecast for the 2006/07 season two weeks ago.

Darfur rebels said they attacked a Chinese-run oil field in Sudan on Tuesday and vowed to launch more assaults on other installations. No one from Sudan’s armed forces or the Ministry of Energy was immediately available for comment on rebel claims of an attack on the field in Sudan’s Kordofan region.

South Africa bowler Nicky Boje on Tuesday denied charges of match-fixing under questioning by Indian police probing the scandal that hit cricket seven years ago, officials said. The 34-year-old, who was escorted to a New Delhi interrogation centre by South African diplomats, was grilled for nearly two hours by Crime Branch detectives.

The man caught up in the national hoax email saga, Muziwendoda Kunene, briefly appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court in the Free State on Tuesday. A court official said Kunene’s case was postponed and transferred to the Kestell Magistrate’s Court, where he was expected to appear on Wednesday.

Two bombs exploded in the Algerian capital, Algiers, on Tuesday, killing 20 people and wounding 43, a security source said. One blast killed 15 people near the Constitutional Court building and the other killed five close to the United Nations offices and a police station in the upscale Hydra district, the source said.

South Africa’s current account plunged further into deficit in the third quarter of 2007 as both oil-import costs and payments to foreign investors surged, but household spending eased due to higher interest rates. The central bank said in its latest quarterly bulletin the shortfall on the current account swelled to a record R162,6-billion, or 8,1% of gross domestic product.
