Cosa Nostra was on Tuesday reeling from the latest in a succession of blows after the arrest of dozens of reputed mafiosi in the Sicilian city of Catania. They included the son of the city’s jailed ”godfather”. The raids which netted 38-year-old Vincenzo Santapaola and 37 others came a day after police shot and killed another mafia leader.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Wednesday would not comment on a report that Glen Agliotti — accused of the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble — had entered into a deal with the Scorpions. Earlier, a media report said that Agliotti’s deal was linked to the drug charges he faces relating to an international smuggling ring.

Tuareg-led rebels in Niger’s desert north attacked a military convoy carrying food and provisions to the oasis town of Iferouane, killing at least three soldiers, the government said late on Tuesday. The rebel Niger Movement for Justice said its fighters destroyed nine military vehicles.

More than 100 000 people lined the streets around Bangkok’s glittering Grand Palace on Wednesday to cheer Thailand’s revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej as he celebrated his 80th birthday. The crowds, dressed in yellow shirts and waving flags emblazoned with a royal emblem, lined the broad tree-fringed avenues leading to the palace.

Democratic Republic of Congo troops entered Mushake, a strategic eastern village, on Tuesday after a second day of heavy clashes with rebel soldiers. ”Fighting is still going on in Mushake. Another local flight, this time involving an aircraft belonging to South African Express, was delayed on Tuesday in George, it was disclosed on Wednesday. This followed the delay of a South African Airways flight in East London — also on Tuesday. The South African Express flight was delayed for more than 12 hours.
