Cape Town firefighters have brought under control a fire that broke out in an industrial building in Salt River early on Tuesday.
Johan Minnie of the city’s disaster management said the fire, which started in the building before spreading to a nearby train station, had finally been contained by late afternoon.
”The fire is now under control and firefighters are expected to leave the scene in the next two hours or so,” he said.
The damage caused by the fire was massive, and some train coaches had also been damaged or destroyed.
”The damage is extensive, but we cannot confirm the number of coaches that have been destroyed by the fire,” Minnie said.
There were 19 firefighting vehicles at the scene in the afternoon. The cause of the fire was not yet known.
Transnet could not confirm reports that the fire started at one of its buildings.
Company spokesperson Jimmy Dludlu, who said the parastatal had a building in the area, was still trying to establish whether the Transnet building was affected by the fire. — Sapa
