A fire set by inmates swept through a prison in a north-eastern Argentine city, killing at least 29 people, authorities said on Monday. Many of the deaths were caused by asphyxiation as inmates were overcome by smoke, said Ricardo Daives, Justice Minister for the Santiago del Estero province.

Cameroon’s soccer federation are refusing to accept Otto Pfister as their new coach, rejecting his appointment by the country’s sports ministry last week. Fecafoot president Mohamed Iya has told Sports Minister Augustin Edjoa that the federation would not sign a proposed contract with the 70-year-old German coach.

Horn of Africa enemies Ethiopia and Eritrea may return to war over their disputed border in a matter of weeks if there is no major international push to halt them. A war on the boundary killed 70 000 people from 1998 to 2000 and brought untold hardship to two of the world’s poorest nations.

A slim majority of the population favoured racial quotas in national sports teams, a survey by the Human Sciences Research Council said. The results from the South African Social Attitudes Survey showed there were still strong racial disparities in the level of support for quotas.

The JSE remained weak at midday on Monday, in line with overseas markets as the troubled US subprime housing market continues to unsettle investors worldwide. At noon, the JSE’s all-share index was off 0,96%, resources fell 1.70%, the platinum mining index weakened 1,74%, but the gold mining index added 0,98% as the gold price stayed above $800/oz.

Andre Petim, the Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper, was his side’s hero as he saved a late penalty to share the spoils with Free State Stars in a goalless Absa PSL match at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday evening. Ajax were out to avenge the 1-0 defeat they suffered at the hands of Stars, who eliminated them from the Telkom Knockout competition.

Thousands more people were plucked from rooftops in southern Mexico on Sunday even as floods that have left 800 000 people homeless in Tabasco state began to recede, authorities said. The army evacuated 5 000 people in a four-hour operation with 14 helicopters, police official Daniel Montiel said.
