Manuel says balanced growth needed

Higher inflation and deterioration in South Africa’s current account over the past year highlight the need for more balanced growth, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said on Monday. But it appeared that growth was becoming more balanced, with tentative signs that consumption was easing on higher interest rates, he said in a written reply to a parliamentary question.

Chimp beats college students in memory test

Japanese researchers pitted young chimps against human adults in two tests of short-term memory. Overall, the chimps won. That challenges the belief of many people, including many scientists, that ”humans are superior to chimpanzees in all cognitive functions”, said researcher Tetsuro Matsuzawa, of Kyoto University.

Wary Persian Gulf leaders host Ahmadinejad

Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council, wary of the repercussions of Iran’s nuclear programme, opened a two-day summit on Monday at which they were joined by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He was the first Iranian president to attend the gathering of the neighbouring bloc of wealthy Gulf Arab oil producers.
