Mozambique will finally take control this week of the biggest dam in sub-Saharan Africa, which had remained in Portuguese hands for more than three decades after the former colonial power’s departure. ”We are finally going to be able to use the dam to satisfy the energy needs of our country,” said President Armando Guebuza.

A wildfire fuelled by gusty winds destroyed dozens of homes from the mountains to the beaches of southern California’s ritzy Malibu on Saturday and was only partially under control, fire officials said. Thirty-five multimillion-dollar, ranch-style homes in the canyons of central Malibu were destroyed.

Incoming Labour prime minister Kevin Rudd, a Mandarin-speaking former diplomat, has pledged closer Australian ties with overseas allies and unity at home after ending 11 years of conservative rule under John Howard. A Brazilian psychic who set officials in Indonesia scrambling after he predicted a huge quake would hit Sumatra island next month reaffirmed on Wednesday that the disaster is indeed coming. A miner was killed at the Driefontein mine near Carletonville on Saturday, Gold Fields said. ”It is regrettable that a loco guard was injured when he was caught between the locomotive and the loader in a haulage in level 44 in shaft five,” said Gold Fields spokesperson Andrew Davidson.
