Student faces high-court trial for murder of parents

A gay psychology student who in July allegedly shot dead both his parents to spare them the grief of his own suicide, is to go on trial in the Cape High Court next year on two charges of murder. Grant Harris (23) on Friday made his seventh appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, before magistrate Hafeeza Mohamed, since his arrest in August for the double murder.

Call for protection of press freedom in Somalia

A Somali media panel on Friday asked the country’s new Prime Minister, Nur Hassan Hussein, to protect press freedom that has been under siege as the government battles insurgents. The National Union of Somali Journalists appeal came a day after President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed appointed Hussein, a veteran law-enforcement official.

Oil prices slip further from record heights

World oil prices fell on Friday after a momentous week that saw record peaks close to $100 as traders worried about tight energy supplies and geopolitical jitters in key producer countries. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for January delivery, sank 95 cents to $96,34 per barrel. The contract had hit an historic $99,29 on Wednesday.

Dollar hits fresh record low against euro

The dollar hit a new record low against the euro on Friday in a market worried over lower forecasts for United States growth, dealers said. Europe’s single currency struck a new record peak of ,4922 in morning Asian trade, up from the previous record of ,4875 reached on Thursday. The unit was created in 1999.

SA mining union plans safety strike

The National Union of Mineworkers plans to ask its members to down tools on December 4 to protest against a spate of deaths in the country’s mines, the president of the union said. Senzeni Zokwana unveiled the date of the planned action in a speech at a congress of global miners’ unions, which started in Thailand on Thursday, a statement said.
