Kenya has offered asylum to nearly two dozen Somali refugees, yielding to opposition to its plans to deport them to violence-torn Mogadishu, officials said on Monday. A military truck transported the 22 refugees from Nairobi to Kenya’s north-eastern Dadaab refugee camp on Saturday after the government dropped plans to deport them.

At least eight people were killed in Brazil when a section of the stand at a football stadium collapsed as fans were celebrating minutes after a match ended. Dozens of people were also injured, some of them seriously, in the accident late on Sunday in Salvador, the capital of the north-western state of Bahia, media reports said, citing authorities.

Tottenham had an injury-time penalty kick saved in a 1-1 draw Sunday at West Ham in the Premier League. West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green dived to his left to save the shot from Jermain Defoe, who had earned the penalty after being brought down by Lucas Neill.

The JSE was forced to give up some of its earlier gains but the gold mining index was keeping it in the black at midday on Monday. Shortly after its open, the JSE was up over 1%, but by midday, the all-share index had given up almost half of its gains as bank and financial stocks weighed.

Typhoon Mitag swirled out to sea on Monday after killing eight people, destroying homes and flooding rice paddies in the northern Philippines. Mitag, a category-one typhoon with winds of 120km/h at its centre, lost strength as it made landfall late on Sunday and did not directly hit the central Bicol region.

All Blacks coach Graham Henry has re-applied for his job following the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) decision to make the position contestable after the team’s failed World Cup campaign. Henry (61) had until 5pm on Monday to apply for the job after the NZRU rejected a proposal to reappoint his coaching team.

A 14-year-old New Zealand girl nearly lost her eyesight when her eyes were gouged by relatives in a Maori exorcism ceremony in which her cousin died, a report said on Monday. The girl is recovering after emergency operations to save her sight after relatives scratched at her eyes to remove the devil.

More than 8 000 Kenyans have been executed or tortured to death since 2002 when police launched a crackdown on a banned, politically-linked sect, a group of Kenyan lawyers said on Sunday. Security forces launched a crackdown on the Mungiki sect after it was banned in March 2002.
