UN: Kenya offers asylum to Somali refugees

Kenya has offered asylum to nearly two dozen Somali refugees, yielding to opposition to its plans to deport them to violence-torn Mogadishu, officials said on Monday. A military truck transported the 22 refugees from Nairobi to Kenya’s north-eastern Dadaab refugee camp on Saturday after the government dropped plans to deport them.

Champions League: Giants on brink of qualifying

Inter Milan, Barcelona, AS Roma and Rangers are on the brink of qualifying in Tuesday’s Champions League group matches though Arsenal and Manchester United have already reached the knockout stages. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger intends to give some of his young Gunners another chance to impress in the Group H trip to Sevilla.

At least eight dead as stadium collapses in Brazil

At least eight people were killed in Brazil when a section of the stand at a football stadium collapsed as fans were celebrating minutes after a match ended. Dozens of people were also injured, some of them seriously, in the accident late on Sunday in Salvador, the capital of the north-western state of Bahia, media reports said, citing authorities.

Gold keeps JSE firm, banks down

The JSE was forced to give up some of its earlier gains but the gold mining index was keeping it in the black at midday on Monday. Shortly after its open, the JSE was up over 1%, but by midday, the all-share index had given up almost half of its gains as bank and financial stocks weighed.

Typhoon hits northern Philippines

Typhoon Mitag swirled out to sea on Monday after killing eight people, destroying homes and flooding rice paddies in the northern Philippines. Mitag, a category-one typhoon with winds of 120km/h at its centre, lost strength as it made landfall late on Sunday and did not directly hit the central Bicol region.
