And some especially vicious ones bite back, as Maas found out last week. Recently Maas still exhibited the scars from his fight with Rapport readers, which ultimately led to his dismissal.

South African President Thabo Mbeki said on Thursday he was ”very confident” that mediation efforts between Zimbabwe’s government and the opposition would produce a solution to the country’s political crisis. ”They [the talks] have gone very well,” Mbeki said after meeting the two sides.

South Africa will launch a nationwide safety audit in December on all mines in the world’s largest producer of precious minerals in a bid to reduce deaths and accidents, a senior official said on Thursday. Stung by the loss of lives that union officials have called a ”genocide,” the government has vowed to temporarily shut mines whenever deaths occur.

The parole of former bouncer Gary Beuthin is to be revoked following his re-arrest in connection with an assault case, the Department of Correctional Services said on Thursday. Correctional services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said the department was in the process of revoking his parole conditions.

Swedish feminists have continued their campaign to drop their tops at indoor swimming pools, reports said on Thursday. In recent weeks, they have challenged the ban against swimming topless and formed a network that has staged several protests. The campaign began after an incident in September.

Oil steadied above a barrel on Thursday, after falling just shy of the milestone in the previous session, as the dollar tumbled to fresh record lows. United States light crude for January delivery was down one cent at ,28 a barrel by 2.40pm GMT. Oil briefly surged to a lifetime peak of ,29 a barrel on Wednesday.

A nine-day transport strike that has crippled the French rail network appeared to be drawing to a close on Thursday as many local union committees voted to suspend their stoppage and give negotiations a chance. Both the nationwide railways and the Paris local transport network put more trains, metros and buses into service during the day.
