Former British prime minister Tony Blair would be a good choice as the European Union’s first full-time president, French and British leaders said on Friday while stressing that the job is not yet on offer. Blair’s successor, Gordon Brown, praised Blair’s current role as international Middle East envoy, and said he would be a strong candidate for any similar high-profile role.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) army says desertions have weakened rebel forces ahead of a planned offensive against them, but rebel general Laurent Nkunda remains defiant. On Thursday the army put on show what they said were 80 deserters wearing ragtag uniforms from Nkunda’s forces.

Eskom has issued a warning of a high probability of load shedding on Friday night. ”The risk of load shedding remains high during the peak period this evening — 6pm to 9pm — when demand increases,” it said in a statement. Tropical Storm Kiko swirled along Mexico’s Pacific coast and was expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Saturday night, forecasters said on Friday. A tropical-storm watch was issued for western Mexico from Punta San Telmo to Cabo Corrientes. Kiko had maximum sustained winds of 65km/h early on Friday.

A Nobel Prize-winning scientist who reportedly claimed black people are less intelligent than white people has pulled out of a British book tour and gone home, his publicist said on Friday. James Watson won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962 for his part in discovering the structure of DNA.
