Comair will not be bullied by an inefficient and ineffective government department, the company said on Sunday. It was responding to accusations by the Department of Labour that the company did not hire black people. Comair’s joint CEO Erik Venter said: ”These allegations are not only blatantly false but also defamatory.”

At least 17 people were killed by explosions in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities on Sunday, Iraqi police and officials said. Nine people were killed and at least 20 others were also wounded in one of the worst attacks in the Iraqi capital in several weeks, which police said targeted Iraqi Finance Ministry adviser Salman al-Mugotar.

Former southern rebels on Sunday accused Sudan’s president of ”threatening and calling for war” in speech he gave in honour of a government-allied militia charged with a string of atrocities. Pagan Amum, Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, said he deplored the comments by President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

Dale Steyn bowled South Africa to a resounding series win over New Zealand in the second Test on Sunday. SA won by an innings and 59 runs in the seventh over after tea on the third day. The hosts won the first Test in Johannesburg by 358 runs, SA’s biggest win and New Zealand’s heaviest defeat in terms of runs.

Criminals have infiltrated sensitive state structures, including security agencies, and ex-agents and ”comrades” were playing the system, a media quoted Reverend Frank Chikane as saying on Sunday. He also said that no ”political faction of any nature” could be allowed to use the levers of state to achieve its own narrow interests.

Mark Gillespie became the fifth New Zealand to take five wickets on debut as South Africa were bowled out for 383 in their first innings ten minutes before lunch on the third day of the second Castle Lager Test. South Africa resumed play on their overnight score of 272 for three, but Ashwell Prince was caught by substitute Jeetan Petel in the third over of the morning.

World number one Roger Federer put on a vintage display to beat Spain’s David Ferrer 6-2 6-3 6-2 in securing his fourth Masters Cup title at the season-ending event on Sunday. Federer’s victory at the showcase eight-man tournament put him level with Ilie Nastase and one behind the record of five titles held by Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

Italy, Spain and France secured their Euro 2008 passages on Saturday but there was heartbreak for Scotland while England’s slim hopes received a major boost from Israel. After last month’s defeat in Moscow, England’s Euro 2008 fate was taken out of their hands but Israel’s 2-1 upset of Russia in Tel Aviv made them masters of their own destiny once again.

A former Cabinet minister and senior stalwart of Nambia’s ruling party, Hidipo Hamutenya, launched a new movement in Namibia on Saturday, promising a different political vision and accelerated economic growth once in power. Hamutenya resigned from the ruling South West Africa Peoples’ Organisation (Swapo) and as a member of Parliament last week.

Seventeen miners were killed and 14 are missing after a methane explosion ripped through a mine in Ukraine’s Donbass coalfield on Sunday, the latest of a string of accidents in the region’s outdated mines. Ukraine’s Emergencies Ministry said 31 miners had been in the immediate vicinity of the 3am blast at the Zasyadko mine in the coalfield’s main town, Donetsk.
