The cause of the outbreak of diarrhoea in Delmas was not tainted water, Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Lindiwe Hendricks said on Tuesday. ”The results from tests conducted on water samples taken from Delmas have proven negative for microbiological contamination,” Hendricks said.

De Lille met police on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the alleged illegal surveillance of politicians in the city.

Neil Diamond held on to the secret for decades, but he has finally revealed that President John Kennedy’s daughter was the inspiration for his smash hit Sweet Caroline. ”I’ve never discussed it with anybody before — intentionally,” the 66-year-old singer-songwriter said on Monday during a break from recording.

Residents of Botleng township near Delmas have resorted to buying water from local shops following the outbreak of diarrhoea in the area. Maria Sisiphuma, a mother of five children, said she buys water for R8,50 per five litres because she does not want her children to get sick.

Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool has blamed ”overeager” members of his own party for a report that President Thabo Mbeki has intervened to defuse a row over Rasool himself. Rasool, a member of the African National Congress (ANC), was accused in an official report last week of knowingly making incorrect statements to the legislature.

The number of Somalis uprooted by fighting in their own country has hit a ”staggering” one million, the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said 600 000 people are believed to have fled Somalia’s lawless capital, Mogadishu, since February.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is setting aside more than 30 000 square kilometres of rainforest to help protect the endangered bonobo, a great ape that is the most closely related to humans and is found only in this Central African country. The area amounts to just more than 1% of the vast DRC.
