Craig Cumming and Lou Vincent gave New Zealand a solid start in the second Test against South Africa on Friday. New Zealand, who won the toss and chose to bat, were 84-1 at lunch on the first day. Opener Cumming was 38 not out with Vincent on 33 in an unbroken stand of 58 for the second wicket.

Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma promised ”zero tolerance” on Thursday for corruption in his country after a leaked government report said rampant official graft had swallowed up donor funds. Speaking at his formal inauguration in Freetown, the 54-year-old former insurance executive called for a change of attitude in the West African state.

A 37-year-old man who pleaded guilty to stabbing his wife 45 times before driving her into Durban’s harbour in a bid to cover-up the murder was sentenced to 18-years’ imprisonment in the Durban High Court on Friday. Judge Vivienne Niles-Dunér ordered that Dhanendra Heeralall only be eligible for parole after 11 years.

Mauritanian President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi ordered villages to stockpile food to help cushion the effect of rising inflation, his economic adviser said on Thursday. About six thousand tonnes of wheat had already been put aside for the stocks as part of a bid to stabilise prices.

International news agencies have ended their boycott of Australian cricket after reaching a deal over media coverage rights. Reuters, Associated Press and Agence France-Presse had all been refusing to cover the series between Australia and Sri Lanka in protest at Cricket Australia’s demands.
