More than 40 people have been killed in two days of fighting in a north-west Pakistani valley as troops seek to wipe out militants trying to enforce Taliban-style rule, the military and witnesses said on Wednesday. Major Amjad Iqbal, an army spokesperson, said 17 militants were killed in Swat valley’s Shangla district in gun battles overnight.

Miserable world markets dragged the JSE deeper into the red by noon on Wednesday. At noon, the all-share index dropped 1,23% and banks retreated 1,98%. Financials retreated 1,57% and industrials were off 1,81%. The platinum-mining index was down 1,36% and the gold-mining index pulled back 0,56%, while resources gave up 0,52%.

Zimbabwe’s central bank governor said on Tuesday the country would not impose new price controls, easing fears of deeper shortages of basic goods. President Robert Mugabe’s government imposed a blanket freeze on prices of all goods and services in June in a desperate bid to contain the world’s highest inflation rate.

China has committed to sending an engineering unit of peacekeepers to Darfur at the end of the week, the top United Nations peacekeeping official said on Wednesday. China has about 1 800 peacekeepers deployed abroad, making it the second-largest contributor after France.

A former child soldier in Sierra Leone’s civil war was named an ambassador for the United Nations children’s agency on Tuesday, vowing to be an advocate for children worldwide, not just in African war zones. Ishmael Beah lost his family in a rebel attack at about age 12 and and was forced to fight a deadly war.
