Kunene’s email trial postponed until 2008

The man at the centre of the African National Congress hoax email saga, Muziwendoda Kunene, had his case postponed for trial next year in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday. Kunene, who had his left hand bandaged after he was shot last week, is charged with contravening the Intelligence Services Oversight Act.

Tragedy unfolds in Bangladesh

Four days after Cyclone Sidr killed more than 2 500 people in Bangladesh, rescuers were struggling to reach isolated areas along the country’s devastated coast and give aid to millions of survivors. ”The tragedy unfolds as we walk through one after another devastated village,” said relief worker Mohammad Selim in Bagerhat, one of the worst-hit areas.

JSE weaker in line with European markets

The JSE was weaker at midday on Monday, erasing earlier gains following a similar trend in European markets on early indications that Wall Street was likely to open lower. At noon, the all-share index was down 0,69%. Resources fell 1,75% while the gold- and platinum-mining indices gave up 0,46% and 1,81% respectively.

East Africa integration ‘good for growth’

The momentum towards regional integration in East Africa received encouragement from the United States this week, with US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson saying that it should boost economic growth in the five-member East Africa bloc. "This is a region that has showed great economic growth over the last couple of years," he said.

SA surge into third place in Test table

South Africa’s comprehensive clean sweep of its two-match series against New Zealand has lifted it to third position in the latest LG ICC Test championship table. Graeme Smith’s side, which won Tests in Johannesburg (358 runs) and Centurion (an innings and 59 runs) collected four rating points for its efforts.

Netcare full-year headline earnings up 27%

Netcare, Africa’s largest private hospital group, increased full-year adjusted headline earnings per share by 27% to 61,8 cents and said on Monday it expected strong growth in its sector to continue. Netcare said total revenue from its South African and United Kingdom operations rose 66,8% to R18,61-billion for the year to end-September.
