The man at the centre of the African National Congress (ANC) hoax email saga, Muziwendoda Kunene, had his case postponed for trial next year in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday.
Kunene, who had his left hand bandaged after he was shot last week, is charged with contravening the Intelligence Services Oversight Act.
Kunene’s warrant of arrest was withdrawn after he produced evidence that his absence in court on November 5 was due to a hijacking.
He said he was hijacked by four men in two separate cars in Fourways and was then dropped off in Kwazulu-Natal.
The magistrate said the court would not be pursuing the hijacking matter any further.
The magistrate also noted that Kunene’s failure to appear was not due to negligence.
Reacting to the withdrawal of the warrant after court proceedings, Kunene said he was glad that the SA justice system was effective.
”I’m not worried. There is no cause for concern as I haven’t done anything wrong and I’m grateful that the court saw that,” he said, adding that he was feeling fine.
Kunene allegedly withheld information on emails which were aimed at discrediting senior ANC officials.
The emails allegedly implicated senior ANC members in a conspiracy against then ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma and ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthle.
The case was set to resume next year on March 13 and 14.
Police are also investigating attempted murder charges after Kunene was shot in the hand by two men in Pretoria last week. – Sapa
