Eskom officials breathed a sigh of relief on Monday after making it through the weekend, and South Africa’s crucial rugby victory against Argentina, without any power cuts. ”We all got to enjoy a good game of rugby,” said spokesperson Fani Zulu. He said there may have been small localised interruptions due to technical problems caused by storms and heavy rain.

A plane carrying members of the Australian and Indian cricket teams made an emergency landing in western India on Monday after it was hit by a bird, officials said. ”Both the teams are safe,” airport director SM Borkar told reporters. The Australian team were to board another flight later in the day, officials said.

Authorities have ordered the deportation of two Americans working for a security firm that was trying to recruit Namibians to work as guards at United States facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Namibian Cabinet also recommended the closure of the local branch of the Las Vegas-based security firm, Special Operations Consulting-Security Management Group.

French tourism is enjoying a boom thanks to the Rugby World Cup, with hundreds of thousands of rugby fans filling top-end hotels and proving wealthier and better behaved than the average soccer supporter. France Tourism Minister Luc Chatel said an estimated 350 000 foreign fans and their families would be drawn to France during the six-week tournament, which ends on October 20.

Airbus on Monday delivered the first of its A380s, the world’s biggest passenger jet, to Singapore Airlines, 18 months behind schedule but with both sides hailing the major advance in air travel. The 73m-long superjumbo was handed over in a ceremony at the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse in southern France.

The JSE scraped back into the black as firmer metal prices outweighed a firmer rand, creating support for the local bourse. By noon, the all-share index was 0,28% better, as the gold mining index advanced 1,12%. Resources were up 0,87% and the platinum mining index was 0,18% higher.
