Two lions — thought to have escaped from the Kruger National Park in September — were shot and killed near the park’s Numbi gate, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks agency said on Monday. Officials tracked down the lions after a community member reported that five of his cattle had been killed by them.

Severe poverty levels in South Africa have doubled in the last 10 years, the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) said on Monday. A survey released by the SAIRR this month showed that poverty in the country increased ”dramatically” between 1996 and 2005, said researcher Marius Roodt.

The 45-year-old driver accused of causing a bus accident on Friday appeared briefly in the Piketberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Western Cape police said. Ten farm workers died when their bus went over a cliff near Piketberg in the Boland, and seven remain in a critical condition in hospital.

Twenty African migrants were feared dead after the boat in which they were trying to reach Spain capsized in bad weather off the coast of The Gambia at the weekend, Gambian state television said on Monday. Police were alerted by a survivor, Lamin Fatty, who said the boat had been carrying 50 passengers when it capsized.

Airbus named on Monday Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal as the first private buyer of an A380 superjumbo, the world’s largest passenger airliner. The prospective buyer’s identity had been kept secret for months but was unveiled to coincide with the Dubai air show.

A big fire at a warehouse sent out a pall of black smoke over east London on Monday, but there were no reports of casualties and police said there was nothing to suggest it was anything more than a fire. Fifteen fire engines and 75 firefighters rushed to the scene of the blaze at an industrial estate in the Stratford area of east London.

Mail & Guardian publisher Trevor Ncube has scotched rumours that Tokyo Sexwale’s Mvelaphanda Group is planning to buy a 30% stake in the newspaper. Ncube said that the company was in talks with a number of people, but at this stage, a deal was not on the cards.

About three million South African have diabetes and an estimated three million people living with diabetes remain undiagnosed, the International Diabetes Foundation said on Monday. Recently released figures also show that diabetes currently affects 246-million people globally and is expected to affect 380-million people by 2025.

Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille should focus on her own party rather than concern herself with the African National Congress’s (ANC) business, Deputy Defence Minister Mluleki George said on Monday. He called Zille’s proposal to postpone the ANC conference in December ”ridiculous”.
