US court gives nod to apartheid claims

A United States appellate court on Friday allowed claims brought by victims of apartheid against dozens of major companies to go forward, saying a lower court erred in ruling it did not have jurisdiction over the matter. The plaintiffs include South Africa’s non-profit Khulumani Support Group.

For years, former United States vice-president Al Gore and a host of climate scientists were belittled and, worst of all, ignored for their message about how dire global warming is. On Friday, they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their warnings about what Gore calls ”a planetary emergency”.

Aussie horse-racing fans make do with camels

Australian fans starved of horse racing because of an outbreak of equine influenza received bizarre relief when camels took to the track in Sydney. The strictly no-betting, amateur-jockey race meet took place on Friday night at Harold Park Paceway, which is among tracks where racing has been suspended during the disease outbreak.

US fears threats to peace process in Sudan

The United States fears that attacks in Darfur and an impasse in implementation of a peace agreement in southern Sudan threaten peace efforts throughout the embattled North African country. The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement accused the central government on Thursday of failing to abide by the peace agreement.

More bodies found in flood-hit Haiti

At least 45 people have died in the poverty-stricken island of Haiti as homes were swept away in floods triggered by heavy rain, the Interior Ministry said Friday. Interior Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aime said 23 bodies had been found on Thursday in Cabaret, just north of the capital, and 12 were missing.

Prison time for US porn email spammers

Two men who sent millions of unsolicited pornographic emails have been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison as part of the first prosecution under a federal anti-spam law, United States Department of Justice officials said. Prosecutors said that the two men started their spamming business four years ago.
