Passionate kiss lands art lover in court

A self-professed art lover stood trial this week accused of damaging a $2-million painting by kissing it while wearing red lipstick. The deputy prosecutor in Avignon accused the defendant on Tuesday, Sam Rindy, of "savagery" for having left a lipstick smear on the work by United States artist Cy Twombly.

Blinkx challenges Google in video ad arena

Online video search service <i>blinkx</i> took on <i>Google</i> with the launch on Wednesday of a video advertising platform to challenge one released by the internet giant a day earlier. The <i>blinkx</i> AdHoc platform lets people embed ad-laced videos in their websites and then share in advertising revenues.

Pumas and Boks turn up volume of insults

Argentina and South Africa have pumped up the volume in a war of words ahead of their World Cup semifinal on Sunday by exchanging mutual insults. Pumas full-back Ignacio Corleto blasted the 1995 champions as ”arrogant” while Springboks scrumhalf Fourie du Preez claimed opposite number Agustin Pichot was ”irritating”.

Renegade DRC general calls for ceasefire

Renegade former general Laurent Nkunda late on Wednesday called for a truce in his battle with the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo after at least 85 rebels died in four days of heavy clashes. Nkunda also offered to send 500 of his men to a transit camp pending their integration into the regular forces.

The devastating cost of Africa’s wars

Conflicts in Africa since the end of the Cold War have cost the continent -billion, equivalent to all the foreign aid it has received over the same period, according to a report released by Oxfam on Thursday. The study, Africa’s Missing Billions, says that almost half of the countries on the continent have been involved in some form of conflict since 1990.

SA confident about attendance at EU-AU summit

South Africa is confident that a ”critical number” of European and African leaders would be in attendance at the planned European Union (EU)-African Union (AU) summit in Portugal in December to make it worthwhile. Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said: ”Summits depend on a number of people to be there, not just one person.”
