Alastair Cook hit a masterly 80 as England thrashed Sri Lanka by five wickets in the fourth one-day international on Wednesday to clinch their first series win on the subcontinent for 20 years. The 22-year-old left-hander shared a 110-run stand for the third wicket with Kevin Pietersen (63 not out) to give England a memorable win in the day-night game.

Resource stocks added plenty of extra muscle to the JSE on Thursday, which was underpinned by strength in gold and platinum. Earlier in the session the JSE hit a fresh trading high of 31 628,820 points, but was slightly below that level by midday.

South Africa’s gold companies, already mining at the world’s deepest depths, are looking to plumb even deeper veins in a new gold rush spurred by record prices.
The deeper miners go, the richer the ore being uncovered. The price in dangers, though, includes rockfalls, poisonous gas explosions, flooding and earthquakes.

South African petrochemicals and fuels group Sasol has sold 20% of its mining subsidiary to a black women-controlled mining company for R1,9-billion, the company said on Thursday. Sasol said the black women-controlled firm, Ixia Coal, will acquire the stake through the issue of new shares.

China is to relocate at least four million more people from the Three Gorges Dam reservoir area in the next 10 to 15 years to protect its ”ecological safety”. Senior officials who have defended the project as an engineering wonder now warn that areas around the dam are paying a heavy environmental cost.

Captain Graeme Smith scored his first century in 17 matches to put South Africa in control of the second Test against Pakistan at lunch on the fourth day on Thursday. Smith made his 12th Test century and Jacques Kallis (69 not out) his 47th fifty to take South Africa to 211 for two at the interval

Thirteen suspected insurgents, including three members of al-Qaeda in Iraq responsible for the assassination of a Sunni Arab preacher, were killed in a United States air strike. The strike on Wednesday west of Baghdad came hours after the imam, identified as Abu Bilal and who had been preaching against Sunni Islamist al-Qaeda, was killed.

Positive public response to conserving electricity resulted in no load shedding by Eskom since early on Thursday morning. Eskom officials said if the public continued to intensify their efforts in saving electricity, there may be no load shedding throughout the day.
