Captain Graeme Smith scored his first century in 17 matches to put South Africa in control of the second Test against Pakistan at lunch on the fourth day on Thursday.
Smith made his 12th Test century and Jacques Kallis (69 not out) his 47th fifty to take South Africa to 211 for two at the interval, 362 runs ahead and on course to win the two-test series following their victory in the opening match.
Smith, who resumed on 75, played very watchfully and reached three figures in the final over before lunch when he clipped Younis Khan to mid-wicket for two.
His innings spanned 257 balls and 352 minutes with 12 fours and he and Kallis have put on 145 runs for the third wicket from 349 balls.
Smith, who hit just one boundary in the session, scored his last Test century against West Indies in Antigua in 2005.
The two batsmen resumed on 154 for two and frustrated the bowlers, although Kallis hit three boundaries after being dropped on 47 by Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik at long off.
The let-off came in left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman’s first over of the day as he and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria did the bulk of the bowling with seamer Mohammad Asif injured and Umar Gul also struggling. – Reuters
