The intimate correspondence between Adolf Hitler and members of the German public is being made public for the first time, revealing how some sent him gifts of honey while others pleaded with him for their lives. Four staff were hired to deal exclusively with the mass of post sent to Hitler after he became chancellor in January 1933.

Harmony Gold could lose about 600kg of gold at its Elandsrand mine after it launched repairs and a probe into an accident that trapped thousands of workers, an official said on Wednesday. The investigations are expected to last a month at a mine that is one of Harmony’s biggest.

Parents will have to cough up at least R300 for giving children a clip on the ear if they are prosecuted under the proposed Children’s Act, a media report said on Tuesday. The new law stipulates that no form of corporal punishment is legal and a child may not be punished in a way that is ”cruel, inhuman or degrading”.

Australian doctors used an intravenous feed of vodka to keep an Italian tourist alive after he consumed large quantities of a poisonous substance. The 24-year-old man, in an apparent bid at self-harm, had swallowed ethylene glycol, found in antifreeze, which can cause death.

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Doornfontein and Auckland Park Bunting Road campuses remained shut on Wednesday after student protest action at the university this week. UJ spokesperson Sonja Cronje said there were about 10 to 15 protesters toyi-toying outside the main gates of the Doornfontein campus.

Iraqi authorities on Wednesday condemned the killing in Baghdad of two women by foreign security guards, as the firm which hired the contractors defended its action. Tuesday’s bloodbath comes just days after Iraq vowed to punish United States security firm Blackwater after a probe found that its guards opened "deliberate" fire in Baghdad three weeks ago.

An American citizen arrested by police in Zimbabwe and charged with smuggling was free to leave the country after paying a fine, a US embassy official said on Tuesday. Leslie Francis Howell Jr, from Florida, was arrested at Victoria Falls airport when he tried to board a plane with two pistols and 300 rounds of ammunition.

All Blacks winger Doug Howlett was arrested in London and may face charges after an incident at the team’s hotel near Heathrow Airport, the New Zealand Rugby Union said. The union is investigating the incident at the Hilton Hotel in which two cars were damaged.

No individual’s opinion on who should be elected to the African National Congress’ national leadership took precedence in Gauteng, the party’s new provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile said on Tuesday. Mashatile, reportedly a backer of ANC presidential hopeful Tokyo Sexwale, beat Angie Motshekga in the race to become chairperson at the conference on Sunday.
