Iraqi authorities on Wednesday condemned the killing in Baghdad of two women by foreign security guards, as the firm which hired the contractors defended its action. Tuesday’s bloodbath comes just days after Iraq vowed to punish United States security firm Blackwater after a probe found that its guards opened "deliberate" fire in Baghdad three weeks ago.

A woman stuffed the ends of her veil in her mouth to choke her cries, as men carried the wooden coffin of a 48-year-old Senegalese officer killed in the deadliest blow to peacekeepers in Darfur. Ten peacekeepers, including both soldiers and policemen, were killed when an estimated 1 000 rebels stormed an African Union base.

Southern Africa is on track to form a free trade zone by 2008 and is still considering establishment of a customs union. ”We will be able to meet the deadline of the FTA [Free Trade Area] and we are seeing what we can do to meet the customs union,” Xolelwa Mlumbi-Peter, a South African trade official.

All Blacks winger Doug Howlett was arrested in London and may face charges after an incident at the team’s hotel near Heathrow Airport, the New Zealand Rugby Union said. The union is investigating the incident at the Hilton Hotel in which two cars were damaged.

An American citizen arrested by police in Zimbabwe and charged with smuggling was free to leave the country after paying a fine, a US embassy official said on Tuesday. Leslie Francis Howell Jr, from Florida, was arrested at Victoria Falls airport when he tried to board a plane with two pistols and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Cocaine with an estimated street value of R2,7-million has been found at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Wednesday. Police said the cocaine was hidden in boxes stored in a South African Airways warehouse.

No individual’s opinion on who should be elected to the African National Congress’ national leadership took precedence in Gauteng, the party’s new provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile said on Tuesday. Mashatile, reportedly a backer of ANC presidential hopeful Tokyo Sexwale, beat Angie Motshekga in the race to become chairperson at the conference on Sunday.

The South Africa Environment Outlook report highlights a number of emerging environmental risks. These are environmental problems that are not yet fully understood and there are no comprehensive responses to the challenges they pose. Serious environmental challenges which the report identifies as requiring a political response over the next five to 10 years include climate change, ozone layer depletion, acid rain and genetically modified organisms.

The authors of the comprehensive <i>South Africa Environment ÂOutlook</i> report say it has already made an impact on how people view the country’s resources. The report, based on 16 Âspecialist studies over a two-year period, aimed to provide scientifically Âcredible information to help drive the future environmental agenda. It cited four major priorities: water availability and quality, climate change.

The findings of the South Africa Environment Outlook report were predictable. It talks of a dismal future amid the withering of natural resources as a result of rapid growth and consumption. You can bet that in four or five years’ time if a similar report is done, the grim prognosis will not be any different. In fact, the situation might well be worse, given the projected growth in the economy of about 6%.
