Santos put on their best home performance and were held to a 1-1draw by defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premier League soccer match at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
The home side should have held at least a 3-0 lead at the interval. Instead, they went into the break with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a penalty by Erwin Isaacs, who was
fouled in the box.
In the second half, Santos again were the playmakers but failed to score.
Sundowns bounced back with precision football. They did, however, get the equaliser from a goal-mouth scramble as Patrick Kiru steered the ball past keeper Lee Langevelt.
Calvin Marlin, in goal for Sundowns, saved his side from defeat with some brilliant saves. In the last minute of the game, substitute Ryan Chapman saw his header beat Marlin as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back into play.
Mogogi Gabonamong, Thando Mngomeni and Tawonga Chimodzi shone for Santos, while Brent Carelse, Dillon Sheppard and Josta Dladla kept the Santos defence busy. – Sapa
