Twenty feared dead as migrant boat capsizes

Twenty African migrants were feared dead after the boat in which they were trying to reach Spain capsized in bad weather off the coast of The Gambia at the weekend, Gambian state television said on Monday. Police were alerted by a survivor, Lamin Fatty, who said the boat had been carrying 50 passengers when it capsized.

The United States could unleash vastly superior firepower if it attacked Iran but Tehran could strike back against its forces in Iraq and threaten oil supplies crucial to the world economy. Speculation is growing that President George Bush could launch military action before he leaves office in January 2009 even though Washington says it is committed to resolving the crisis.

Firefighters battle large London blaze

A big fire at a warehouse sent out a pall of black smoke over east London on Monday, but there were no reports of casualties and police said there was nothing to suggest it was anything more than a fire. Fifteen fire engines and 75 firefighters rushed to the scene of the blaze at an industrial estate in the Stratford area of east London.

Millions in SA living with diabetes

About three million South African have diabetes and an estimated three million people living with diabetes remain undiagnosed, the International Diabetes Foundation said on Monday. Recently released figures also show that diabetes currently affects 246-million people globally and is expected to affect 380-million people by 2025.

BHP Billiton not giving up on Rio Tinto

The world’s biggest resources group, BHP Billiton, on Monday piled pressure on Rio Tinto to take another look at its proposed $153-billion all-scrip merger by pitching the benefits of the merger to analysts and shareholders. Marius Kloppers, CEO of BHP Billiton, said the combination would unlock value that is otherwise unavailable.
