Turkey stepped up pressure on the United States to help curb attacks by Kurdish rebels from northern Iraq as a conference on Saturday of Iraq’s neighbours and major powers sought to lower cross-border tensions. The ”neighbours’ conference”, hosted by Turkey, was meant to focus on security inside Iraq but instead it is overshadowed by tensions between Turkey and Iraq.

Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, met on Friday with Aids orphans being cared for by a charity in Lesotho launched in memory of his late mother Princess Diana. The 23-year-old, on his fifth visit to the mountainous Southern African kingdom, travelled to a remote western region where he launched the Sentable charity a little over a year ago.

The police are obliged to investigate fraud and corruption charges against Scorpions boss Gerrie Nel if a criminal complaint has been brought, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) said on Friday. This would be necessary, even if the complaint was the latest salvo in the police’s ongoing spat with the Scorpions, said senior researcher Jake Moloi.

The United Nations’s special envoy to Burma, Ibrahim Gambari, was expected in Rangoon on Saturday for talks with the country’s ruling generals amid a row over the threatened expulsion of another diplomat. Gambari’s visit comes amid conflicting signals from the junta over its willingness to reform, in the wake of street protests against the ruling regime.

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe is ignoring approaches from former South African president Nelson Mandela to step down, reports said on Friday. The Zimbabwe Independent, quoting unnamed sources, also said that former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan had tried to meet with Mugabe to discuss his retirement.

Actor Henry Cele, famous for his role as Shaka Zulu, died in Durban’s St Augustine’s Hospital on Friday afternoon. The 58-year old actor passed away in the intensive-care unit of the hospital, a statement released by the hospital said. He had been admitted to the hospital more than a week ago with a chest infection.
