Unbeaten fighters Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton began the build-up to their December 8 duel in Las Vegas with some verbal sparring on Monday. At a press conference in the Hollywood tourist haven of Universal City England’s Hatton and American Mayweather took turns taking pot-shots at each other as they launched a promotional tour.

Kenny Miller scored the only goal of the game to earn Derby their first Premiership win of the season on Monday to put Newcastle’s Euro 2008 qualifying star Michael Owen out of the spotlight. Miller’s 39th-minute goal, from fully 33m, meant Derby had their first win in six matches to lift them off the bottom of the table ahead of Bolton.

The United States Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, apologised to the Iraqi government on Monday in an attempt to prevent the expulsion of all employees of the security firm Blackwater USA. The ministry of interior on Monday took the decision to expel Blackwater after eight Iraqi civilians were killed and 13 wounded in Baghdad.

A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy. Carlos Camejo (33) was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realise something was amiss when he started bleeding.

China, the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, will need 3 400 new airplanes worth about $340-billion over the next 20 years, United States aircraft maker Boeing said on Tuesday. The forecast marks a dramatic increase from an earlier prediction by Boeing of 2 900 aircraft in the period from 2005 to 2025.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday reiterated that it was "not at odds" with petrochemical giant Sasol over its proposed R7-billion employment share-ownership scheme. "Media reports about the Sasol … black economic empowerment [BEE] deal would seem to indicate that there is some confusion about the department’s position," the DTI said in a statement.

One of the runaway Kruger National Park lions was killed on Monday night after it was found eating a cow, said the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency. Spokesperson Jimmy Masombuka said the agency received a tip-off on Monday evening about the whereabouts of the lion and surrounded the area.

Nevada authorities are scaling down the search for United States adventurer Steve Fossett after an intensive two-week effort, officials said on Monday. ”It arrives at the point when the mission has to evolve,” Major Cynthia Ryan of the Nevada civil air patrol told Reuters.
