Ethiopia entered the third millennium seven years after the rest of the world on Wednesday, amid lavish celebrations, religious fervour and messages of hope from the troubled country’s leaders. As the giant countdown board in central Addis Ababa flashed the year 2000, thousands of faithful gathered in churches.

The inaugural Twenty20 World Championship is taking South Africa by storm, thrilling fans who are drawn to the exhilarating speed of the high-octane game where anything can happen. The dazzling opening of the 12-nation tournament in Johannesburg on Tuesday saw the 33 000 capacity Wanderers stadium overflowing as fans ”rocked the house, T20 style”.

Fallen hero Tyson set for hearing in drugs case

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is scheduled for a hearing this month in which he could change his plea in a narcotics case. The 41-year-old boxer previously pleaded not guilty to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs. A spokesperson for Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas wouldn’t comment on any possible plea agreement.

Alex Ferguson attacked at train station

A man has been charged with assault after an alleged attack on Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson at a train station. According to British Transport Police, who are responsible for dealing with crime on the train services, Ferguson received injuries to his leg after an incident at Euston Station in London on Monday afternoon after he had travelled from Manchester.
