The JSE remained firm at noon on Tuesday, spurred by Wall Street’s overnight rebound and firmer European markets as risk aversion eased. Miners lifted the main index, buoyed by a recovery in commodities prices as metals investors chased after bargains following Monday’s sharp losses, while a slight weakness in the dollar added to the upbeat mood in the metals complex.

Canadian pathologist Michael Pollanen told the inquest into the death of Bob Woolmer that he couldn’t determine the cause of death of the Pakistan cricket coach who died during the World Cup in March. Pollanen testified on Monday that Woolmer wasn’t strangled, as police initially suggested.

A man was due to appear in court in London on Tuesday over the death of a South African rugby fan who was run over as he walked home after watching the World Cup final. Hugh Morton (34) was run over in the early hours of Sunday, after watching South Africa beat England at a pub in Wimbledon, south-west London.

South African President Thabo Mbeki said on Monday that Bafana Bafana is not a fitting name for a national team. ”What kind of a name is it? I don’t think it is fit for a senior national team or for the hosts of the 2010 Fifa World Cup,” he told Metro FM on Monday.
