Sssmuggling wildlife

Meet the inland taipan and common taipan — two of the world’s most dangerous snakes. The inland taipan is estimated to be 20 times as venomous as a common cobra. The common taipan has a kill rate second only to the black mamba, nearing 100%. Now imagine being on the same flight as these guys.

Van Schalkwyk’s elephantine error

Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk is having a rough ride after he spent time at a Limpopo outfit that captured young elephants from the wild for elephant-back safaris. Wildlife groups are furious after Van Schalkwyk visited Elephants for Africa Forever, an elephant training outfit.

Victims of forgotten conflict

A series of devastating attacks in which armed men loot homes, kill unarmed civilians and burn down villages has pushed an entire population into hiding in remote areas of the north-western Central African Republic. Villagers have fled their homes and taken to the bush, living in the forests to avoid further attacks.

Ireland make hard work of beating Namibia

Brian O’Driscoll scored a try four minutes into his return from injury on Sunday but it proved to be a rare highlight for Ireland as they opened their World Cup campaign with a scrappy 32-17 victory over Namibia. O’Driscoll scored the first of his team’s five tries that earned his team a bonus point to leapfrog Argentina.

Victorious Federer has Sampras in his sights

Roger Federer hoisted aloft the US Open trophy for a fourth straight year on Sunday after victory over Novak Djokovic before swiftly turning his gaze to Pete Sampras and the all-time record for grand slam titles. The victory was worth ,4-million to the Swiss world number one, but the only figure Federer really cared about was moving his grand slam titles haul to 12.

Zuma: Umshini Wami part of SA history

African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma questioned the ”Americanisation” of culture in South Africa, criticising television images of sex and violence during a speech in Johannesburg on Sunday. ”There’s more violence on the TV … there’s more open sex on TV. What education are you giving to us? Is that part of our culture?”
