Sierra Leone counted votes on Sunday from a tense presidential run-off which went peacefully despite fears of violence, but both sides accused the other of fraud and intimidation. Saturday’s presidential run-off vote will pick a successor to President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, who is standing down after two terms.

Wales had to call on the experience of captain Gareth Thomas and Stephen Jones coming off the bench on Sunday to repel Canada and record a 42-17 victory in the second Pool B match at La Beaujoire on Sunday. Canada were 17-9 ahead close to the hour after three unanswered tries before Wales at last showed some true attacking flair.

Iraq’s Shi’ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Sunday his government had made progress on all fronts and urged neighbouring countries to work together to stop what he called ”evil” from destabilising the region. Senior Democrats in the United States have slammed Maliki’s performance, with some even calling for his replacement.

Pakistani authorities tightened security at Islamabad’s airport after detaining more than 2 000 supporters of exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his party said on Sunday, the eve of his planned return. Sharif, ousted by army chief General Pervez Musharraf in 1999, says he is determined to fly home from London on Monday.

Burundi rebels refused on Sunday to rejoin a truce monitoring team they quit in July unless the South African chief mediator of talks with the government is replaced. The Forces for National Liberation — the last active rebel group in the tiny Central African country — accused Charles Nqakula of bias.

Al-Qaeda’s north Africa wing said it was behind two suicide attacks that killed at least 57 people in Algeria in the past two days, according to a statement posted on the internet on Saturday. It said the al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb was behind Saturday’s suicide truck bombing at a coast guard barracks east of Algiers and an attack in the town of Batna less than 48 hours earlier.

At least 27 people were killed when a bus and a truck collided in southern Tanzania, local newspapers reported on Sunday. The accident on Saturday occurred near the town of Mbeya, about 630km south-west of Dar es Salaam. Newspapers carried photos of the bus with its metal twisted and passengers’ belongings strewn over the ground.

A California gray whale was killed after a group of people harpooned it and shot with a machine gun, officials said. Petty officer Shawn Eggert said the whale disappeared beneath the surface in the evening, dragging buoys that had been attached to the harpoon, and did not resurface.
