Bulldogs break drought with win over Griffons

The Border Bulldogs broke their winless drought when they upset the Griffons 34-26 in their Absa Currie Cup first division match at East London’s Absa Stadium on Saturday. It was the best Bulldogs display of guts and passion the entire season and although they faced a massive onslaught from the Griffons pack after leading 27-13 at the break, their will to win saw them through.

Car bomb kills dozens in Algeria

A car bomb has killed at least 28 coast guard officers in Algeria just days after a blast ripped through a crowd waiting for the president. The bombings are being seen as a show of strength by the country’s main extremist group, which has gained force after linking up with al-Qaeda. Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni warned terrorists that they have ”one choice: turn themselves in or die”.

Kuznetsova admits she wasn’t at her best

Svetlana Kuznetsova said she must work on rising to the big occasion following her 6-1 6-3 defeat by world number one Justine Henin in the US Open final on Saturday. ”I think the match was much closer than the score, for sure,” the 22-year-old Russian, who won the 2004 US Open title, told reporters.

Apec tackles security after climate compromise

Asia-Pacific leaders tackled security issues, including food safety, on the last day of their summit on Sunday. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said leaders of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum would turn to ”human security” issues at their retreat in Sydney Opera House.

Shilowa concerned by violent protests

The violent nature of many recent protests was a major concern, said Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa on Monday. He was briefing the media in Johannesburg on the recent Gauteng Extended Executive Council lekgotla. ”Many [protests] were characterised by street blockades, the burning of tyres and the destruction of property.”
