Representatives of seven Darfur rebel groups met in south Sudan on Monday to try to reach a common negotiating position ahead of peace talks with the government. But huge doubts remain about whether Darfur’s rapidly fracturing rebel groups will be able to agree on a joint set of grievances before they travel to Libya for the negotiations with Khartoum on October 27.

American economists Leonid Hurwicz, Eric Maskin and Roger Myerson won the 2007 Nobel Prize for Economics on Monday for laying the foundations of an economic theory that determines when markets are working effectively. Hurwicz, Russian-born but an American citizen, is 90 years old and is the oldest-ever recipient of a Nobel Prize.

More than 220 managers will have left South African Airways (SAA) by the end of the month as part of the national airline’s restructuring strategy, its spokesperson said on Monday. "SAA has approached the issue of labour in a phased manner, starting with management," said Robyn Chalmers, spokesperson for SAA.

Falling numbers of state dentists in England have led to some people taking extreme measures, including extracting their own teeth, according to a new study released on Monday. Others have used superglue to stick crowns back on, rather than stumping up for private treatment, said the study. One person spoke of carrying out 14 separate extractions on himself with pliers.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) plans to ask the Public Protector to investigate whether the Scorpions’ investigating unit has a political agenda and is abusing its power, the league said on Monday. Spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said the ANCYL was in the process of making an appointment with the Public Protector to discuss its concerns.

United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari told Burma on Monday to stop arresting dissidents and Thailand proposed a regional forum including China and India to nudge the reclusive military junta towards democratic reform. Gambari said the continued arrests and intimidation of activists were ”extremely disturbing”.

Eskom officials breathed a sigh of relief on Monday after making it through the weekend, and South Africa’s crucial rugby victory against Argentina, without any power cuts. ”We all got to enjoy a good game of rugby,” said spokesperson Fani Zulu. He said there may have been small localised interruptions due to technical problems caused by storms and heavy rain.

A plane carrying members of the Australian and Indian cricket teams made an emergency landing in western India on Monday after it was hit by a bird, officials said. ”Both the teams are safe,” airport director SM Borkar told reporters. The Australian team were to board another flight later in the day, officials said.
